Split PDF by Bookmarks

Split a bookmarked PDF into one file per top-level bookmark — chapters out, one click each. Runs entirely in your browser.

About this tool

A bookmarked report, thesis or manual often needs to go out chapter by chapter. This tool reads the top-level outline and produces one PDF per bookmark, named after it, with pages before the first bookmark kept as a "Front matter" file rather than dropped.

If the file has no bookmarks yet, Add PDF Bookmarks creates them in the same browser session — nothing is uploaded at any point.

How to use Split PDF by Bookmarks

  1. Choose exactly one PDF that already has bookmarks.
  2. Run — each top-level bookmark becomes its own PDF, named after the bookmark.
  3. Download the chapter files (or all of them as one ZIP).

Keep the original files and inspect the exported result before publishing or sharing it.

Frequently asked questions

My PDF has no bookmarks — what happens?

The tool says so and stops. Add bookmarks first with the Add PDF Bookmarks tool, then split.

Which bookmarks are used?

Top-level bookmarks only. Nested sub-bookmarks stay inside their chapter’s file. Pages before the first bookmark are reported, not silently dropped — they become a "Front matter" file.

Are the pages changed?

No. Pages are copied exactly, like the Split PDF tool.

Are encrypted PDFs supported?

No. Encrypted or password-protected PDFs are rejected. Export an unlocked copy first.
