PDF Word Count

Count the words, characters and lines of a PDF — totals plus a per-page breakdown and an estimated reading time. Runs entirely in your browser.

About this tool

Word counts drive quotes, deadlines and translation prices, and PDF is where documents live. This tool counts words, characters and lines in a PDF's embedded text — totals for the document and a per-page table, plus a reading-time estimate.

The per-page breakdown earns its place: it instantly shows which pages are scanned images (zero words) in a mixed document, before you promise anyone a word count.

How to use PDF Word Count

  1. Choose up to 20 PDF files (20 MB each).
  2. Run — the text of every page is counted.
  3. Read the statistics in the preview or download the report.

Keep the original files and inspect the exported result before publishing or sharing it.

Frequently asked questions

What counts as a word?

A run of non-space characters in the embedded text. Hyphenated words count once; numbers count as words.

What about scanned PDFs?

Scanned pages have no embedded text and count as zero words. This tool does not perform OCR.

How is reading time estimated?

At 200 words per minute, a standard adult silent-reading pace. Dense technical text reads slower.

Is there a size cap?

Extracted text is capped at 2 million characters per batch, the same limit as the other text tools.
