Add PDF Bookmarks

Give a PDF a real bookmark outline: readers can jump to chapters from the sidebar. Type page-and-title lines, or generate one bookmark per page automatically.

About this tool

Long PDFs without an outline force readers to scroll and guess. This tool writes a real bookmark outline into the file: give it page-and-title lines, or let it generate one bookmark per page from each page's first line of text.

Bookmarks are the navigation every reader shows in its sidebar, and they are what Split PDF by Bookmarks uses to cut a document into chapters.

How to use Add PDF Bookmarks

  1. Choose up to 20 PDF files (20 MB each).
  2. Type one bookmark per line — page number, a space, then the title — or leave the box empty to use each page’s first line of text.
  3. Download the bookmarked PDFs and open one to check the outline panel.

Keep the original files and inspect the exported result before publishing or sharing it.

Frequently asked questions

What does the automatic mode use as titles?

The first line of embedded text on each page. Pages without text get a "Page n" title. Check the result in your reader’s outline panel and re-run with a typed list if the titles are not clean.

What happens to existing bookmarks?

They are replaced by the new outline. Run the tool on the original file if you need to start over.

Do bookmarks change the pages?

No. Only the document outline is added; page content is untouched.

Are encrypted PDFs supported?

No. Encrypted or password-protected PDFs are rejected. Export an unlocked copy first.
