Word counter

Count characters, words, lines and paragraphs, and estimate reading time. Paste text or load a .txt file.

About this tool

Writers, students and marketers count words for practical reasons: an essay limit, a description target, a script that must fit a time slot. This counter tallies characters, words, lines and paragraphs as you type, and estimates reading time at 200 words per minute, a widely used average for silent reading of English text.

You can paste text directly or load a UTF-8 .txt file of up to 5 MB. Counting is deliberately simple and predictable — words are split on whitespace, paragraphs are blocks separated by blank lines — matching how most editors and submission systems measure. Your text is counted in this tab only and is never uploaded.

How to use Word counter

  1. Paste text or load a UTF-8 .txt file (up to 5 MB).
  2. Counts update as you type.
  3. Use the stats for writing goals, SEO checks, or reading estimates.

Keep the original files and inspect the exported result before publishing or sharing it.
