Count words, paragraphs, and reading time instantly. Paste text or load a file — free, live, and private.
Words, paragraphs, and reading time
Word count is the unit that writing lives in: assignments specify it, publishers pay by it, and readers feel it as time. This tool shows the full picture at a glance — words, characters with and without spaces, lines, paragraphs, and an estimated reading time — updating live as you type, so you can watch a draft grow into its target.
For writers and students
Essays with a 1,500-word requirement, articles with a 800-word brief, novels with a daily 1,000-word goal: paste your draft and check where you stand without opening a word processor. The paragraph count helps you spot walls of text, and the reading-time estimate tells you how long your piece asks of its reader — useful before you hit publish on anything.
For SEO and content work
Word count does not directly rank pages, but thin content rarely satisfies a query. When auditing a page, a quick count tells you whether "add a section" means 100 words or 1,000. Pair the count with the reading-time estimate to sanity-check long-form pages: if your guide takes 25 minutes to read, most visitors will skim, so structure it accordingly.
How the counting works
Words are split on whitespace — spaces, tabs, and line breaks — with consecutive separators counting as one, so messy pasted text still counts correctly. Reading time assumes 200 words per minute. If characters are your unit instead (tweets, meta descriptions, SMS), the character counts are shown too — see our character counter page for limit-specific guidance.
Private by design
Unpublished drafts deserve privacy. Everything is counted locally in your browser; pasted text and loaded files are never uploaded anywhere.
Frequently asked questions
How are words counted?
Text is split on whitespace: spaces, tabs, and line breaks all act as separators, and runs of multiple separators count as one. Empty input counts zero words.
How is reading time estimated?
At 200 words per minute, a widely used average for silent reading. Dense, technical, or unfamiliar text takes longer in practice — treat it as a baseline, not a promise.
What counts as a paragraph?
A block of text separated from the next by one or more blank lines. Single line breaks within a block do not start a new paragraph.
Can it count words in a document?
Yes — load a UTF-8 .txt file up to 5 MB and the whole document is analyzed instantly, on your device.
Does it work for languages without spaces?
Word counts are most meaningful for space-separated languages. For languages like Chinese or Japanese, the character count is the more useful number — and it is shown right alongside.
