Sentence Counter
Count the sentences in any text — paste a draft, an essay or an article and see sentences alongside words, characters and reading time. Live count, in your browser, nothing uploaded.
The count that reveals your rhythm
Word counts tell you how long a text is; sentence counts tell you how it moves. Divide one by the other and you get average sentence length — the single quickest readability signal a writer can check. This page pairs the sentence count with the full word counter toolkit: words, characters, lines, paragraphs and estimated reading time, all updating live as you paste or type.
Diagnosing drafts with two numbers
An average above 25 words per sentence usually means readers are holding too much in working memory — split the longest offenders and watch comprehension rise. An average under 10 can feel like a telegram. Neither number is a rule; both are prompts to reread the paragraph aloud and notice where you run out of breath. Academic and legal writing tolerate longer sentences; web copy and instructions should stay lean. The companion character counter handles platform limits, and the reading time calculator turns length into minutes.
Counting, honestly
Sentence counting is punctuation-based, so abbreviations and decimals can blur the edges. For everyday drafts the count is effectively exact; for contracts and scientific text, read it as a close estimate and trust the trend between drafts more than any single figure.
Private by design
Your draft is counted on your own machine. Nothing is uploaded, stored or analysed anywhere else.
Frequently asked questions
How are sentences counted?
By sentence-ending punctuation — full stops, question marks and exclamation marks — followed by a space or the end of the text. It is a practical writer's count, designed to match how a reader experiences the text.
Do abbreviations inflate the count?
They can. Text full of 'e.g.', 'Dr.', or decimal numbers like 3.5 may nudge the count, because a period is doing double duty. For ordinary prose the effect is negligible; for technical documents, treat the number as a close estimate.
Why does sentence count matter?
Sentence length is the rhythm of writing. A page of 40-word sentences is exhausting; a page of 6-word sentences is choppy. Counting sentences alongside words gives you the average sentence length — a fast diagnostic for readability.
What is a good average sentence length?
Plain-English guidance usually lands around 15–20 words per sentence for general audiences. Mix lengths deliberately: short sentences for emphasis, longer ones for explanation.
Is my text uploaded?
No. Counting happens locally in your browser. Drafts, essays and unpublished work never leave your device.
