BMI Calculator for Women

Work out your Body Mass Index as an adult woman and see the WHO category for your result. Enter weight and height in metric or imperial units — the calculation runs privately in your browser.

How BMI works for adult women

Body Mass Index compares your weight with your height: kilograms divided by metres squared. The BMI calculator above accepts metric or imperial units and shows your result against the World Health Organization bands — underweight below 18.5, normal weight from 18.5 to 24.9, overweight from 25 to 29.9, and obesity at 30 and above. For example, a woman who weighs 62 kg at 165 cm has a BMI of about 22.8, inside the normal band.

Why one number is not the whole story

BMI is a screening tool, not a diagnosis, and that matters more for women than the headline number suggests. Two women with identical BMI values can carry fat very differently — around the waist, which is linked to higher metabolic risk, or around the hips, which is not. Muscle, bone density, age and hormonal changes all shift what a given BMI means. Health professionals therefore treat BMI as a first filter and add waist circumference, blood pressure and history before drawing conclusions.

When not to use this calculator

Skip the adult bands during pregnancy, while breastfeeding, and for anyone under 18 — girls use percentile charts that account for growth. Athletes with high muscle mass can also land in the overweight band without excess fat. If your result sits outside the normal range, or you are unsure how to read it, the Body Mass Index calculator page explains the categories in more depth, and a clinician can interpret the number in your context. Frequently asked questions

Is the BMI formula different for women?

No. Adult BMI uses the same formula for women and men: weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared. The WHO categories (underweight below 18.5, normal 18.5–24.9, overweight 25–29.9, obesity 30+) also apply to both sexes.

Why do women sometimes get a different health picture at the same BMI?

Body composition differs on average: women typically carry a higher share of body fat and less muscle mass than men at the same BMI, and fat distribution changes with age and after menopause. That is why clinicians often pair BMI with a waist measurement.

Is this BMI calculator valid during pregnancy?

No. BMI categories are not used to judge weight during pregnancy, because the expected weight gain is healthy and necessary. If you are pregnant, use your care provider's guidance instead of any BMI chart.

What about BMI for girls and teenagers?

Children and teens are assessed with age- and sex-specific percentile charts, not the adult bands used here. This page is for adult women only.

Is my weight or height uploaded?

No. The calculation runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you enter is sent to a server, stored or tracked.
