BMI Calculator for Men

Calculate your Body Mass Index as an adult man and check it against the WHO categories. Metric or imperial units, instant result, and nothing you enter leaves your browser.

BMI for adult men, calculated the standard way

This page runs the same BMI calculator with the standard adult formula — weight divided by height squared — and places your result on the WHO scale: underweight below 18.5, normal 18.5 to 24.9, overweight 25 to 29.9, obesity 30 and above. A man of 80 kg at 180 cm, for instance, scores about 24.7, just inside the normal band. Enter metric or imperial units; the result is the same either way.

The muscle problem

The most common complaint about BMI in men is also the most legitimate: it weighs you, but it cannot see what the weight is made of. Regular strength training adds dense muscle, and the scale — and therefore BMI — treats those kilograms exactly like fat. If you train seriously and your BMI says "overweight" while your waist is lean, the number is describing your build, not a health problem. The reverse also happens: a sedentary man in the normal band can still carry risky abdominal fat.

Pair BMI with your waist

A practical fix is to read BMI together with waist circumference. Health agencies flag roughly 94 cm (37 in) and above as increased risk for men, and 102 cm (40 in) and above as substantially increased, regardless of BMI. The two numbers together catch most of what either misses alone. For the general explainer and category table, see the Body Mass Index calculator, or check the weight range for your height with the healthy weight calculator.

Frequently asked questions

Is the BMI formula different for men?

No. The adult formula is identical for men and women: kilograms divided by metres squared, or 703 × pounds divided by inches squared. The WHO category bands are also the same for both sexes.

Why do muscular men often score as overweight?

BMI cannot tell muscle from fat. Muscle is denser than fat, so a trained man can weigh enough for his height to land in the 25–29.9 overweight band while carrying little body fat. Waist size and body composition give the missing context.

What waist size matters alongside BMI?

As a rough guide used by health agencies, waist circumference above about 94 cm (37 in) for men signals increased metabolic risk, and above 102 cm (40 in) substantially increased risk — whatever the BMI says.

Does BMI change with age for men?

The bands stay the same, but body composition shifts with age: muscle mass tends to fall and fat to rise, so an older man can sit in the normal band with more body fat than the same BMI implied at 25.
