Make an image background transparent

Convert the background of a photo or graphic into real transparency and download a PNG with an alpha channel — free, local, no sign-up.

Transparency is a property of the file, not a colour

"Make the background transparent" sounds simple, but it asks for something specific: an alpha channel, where every background pixel carries an opacity of zero so the image can composite over anything — a web page, a slide, another photo. This page mounts the background remover, which uses an AI segmentation model in your browser to decide, pixel by pixel, what belongs to the subject and what becomes transparent.

When AI transparency beats the old tools

Where transparent images get used

Product shots on marketplace and store themes, logos over headers and footers, stickers and overlays for video and social posts, presentation graphics that must sit on branded slides, and design mock-ups where the same asset appears on light and dark layouts. In each case the workflow is the same: cut out once here, then resize with the product image resizer or compress the PNG for the web — transparency survives both, as long as you keep a format that supports it (PNG or WebP, never JPEG).

Private by design

The image is processed entirely on your device — no upload, no sign-up, no stored copy — and the result downloads at the original dimensions. The AI model itself is a one-time download of about 473 MB, cached by your browser for later visits. Working on a specific job? There are focused pages for logos and product photos running the same tool.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a transparent background and a white one?

A transparent background stores an alpha channel — per-pixel opacity — so whatever sits behind the image shows through. A white background is just white pixels: paste it on a dark page and you get a white box. Only formats like PNG (the output here) and WebP can store transparency; JPEG cannot.

Do I have to outline the subject myself?

No. Unlike magic-wand or colour-picker tools, the AI model understands the scene and finds the subject on its own, which is why it can handle photos — hair, fur, products — where the background is many colours rather than one flat shade.

Why not just delete the white with a colour tool?

Colour deletion fails the moment the subject contains the same colour as the background — a white product on white, a pale sky behind a white bird. The model separates by subject, not by colour, so white parts of the subject survive. Flat graphics with one solid background colour are the one case where a colour tool is equally good.

How do I check the transparency worked?

The preview shows the cut-out on a checkerboard, the universal sign for transparency. After downloading, place the PNG over both a white and a black background: leftover fringing or a missed corner shows up against one of them.

Can I make only part of the background transparent?

This tool separates the whole subject from the whole background; it does not do partial opacity or keep one background object while removing another. For repairing one small marked area instead, the image watermark remover handles local fixes on images you own.
