PNG to WebP

Convert PNG graphics and screenshots to smaller WebP files — with transparency intact — in your browser. Nothing uploaded.

PNG’s size problem

PNG is the default for screenshots, UI graphics and logos because it is lossless and supports transparency. It is also enormous: a full-page screenshot can be several megabytes. WebP keeps the transparency and the crisp edges while typically cutting 30–60% of the bytes — ideal for documentation sites, blogs and app store listings.

How it works

This page mounts the WebP converter set to WebP output. The browser’s canvas API decodes each PNG and re-encodes it as WebP locally — nothing is uploaded. Transparency is preserved because WebP, unlike JPG, carries a full alpha channel. Preview each result, then download individually or as a ZIP (up to 20 files per batch).

Batch workflow for documentation

If you maintain docs with dozens of screenshots, convert them in batches of 20 and download each batch as a ZIP. Name the outputs consistently (the tool preserves original filenames with the new extension) so existing markdown image references keep working after a find-and-replace of .png to .webp. For retina screenshots, converting at full resolution then letting the browser downscale looks sharper than converting an already-downscaled PNG.

Private by design

Screenshots often contain sensitive information. This converter never uploads anything — processing stays in your browser tab.

Frequently asked questions

Does WebP keep PNG transparency?

Yes. Unlike JPG, WebP fully supports an alpha channel, so transparent regions survive the conversion.

How much smaller will the files be?

Often 30–60% smaller than PNG for graphics and screenshots, because WebP compresses flat areas and gradients far more efficiently.

Is WebP lossless like PNG?

WebP supports both modes. This tool’s quality presets use lossy encoding tuned for visual fidelity; at High quality the difference from the PNG is invisible.

What about animated PNG (APNG)?

Only the first frame is converted, same as with animated WebP input.

Can I convert in batches?

Yes: up to 20 files per batch, 20 MB each, 80 MB total, with a single ZIP download.

Are my images uploaded?

No. Everything is decoded and re-encoded with the canvas API in your browser tab.
