MP4 to GIF Converter

Turn a short MP4 segment into a looping GIF in your browser: pick the start time, duration, width and frame rate. Clips up to 15 seconds, converted locally, never uploaded.

A GIF is a reaction, not a video format

For a two-second loop in a chat, a README or a bug report, nothing beats a GIF: it plays everywhere, inline, with no player chrome. The video to GIF converter above cuts a segment of up to 15 seconds from your MP4 (or MOV, WebM, MKV and AVI), builds a colour palette from the actual frames, and writes a looping GIF you can preview before downloading — all with the same local engine as the video to MP4 converter.

Keep it short, keep it small

GIF's weakness is weight: the format stores frames with a limited palette and no modern compression, so size grows brutally with duration, width and frame rate. The controls exist to manage exactly that — trim the moment tightly, drop the width to what the chat window will show, and use a modest frame rate. Expect colours to shift slightly where gradients meet the palette limit, and remember the output is silent by definition. If the clip's value is its sound instead, MP4 to MP3 extracts just the audio.

Loops made locally

Your video is read and encoded in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, so even a screen recording of internal software is safe to turn into a bug-report GIF.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my GIF bigger than the video it came from?

GIF is an old, inefficient format: a few seconds of video can outweigh the whole MP4. Shorten the clip, reduce the width or lower the frame rate — all three shrink the GIF quickly.

How long can the GIF be?

Clips are limited to 15 seconds. That is deliberate: beyond a few seconds a GIF becomes enormous and a muted looping video is the better format for almost every platform.

Does the GIF keep the sound?

No. GIF has no audio track at all, so the output is silent. If the sound matters, keep the clip as a video or extract the audio separately as MP3.

Why do the colours look different?

GIF supports a limited colour palette, generated from your clip for the best match. Smooth gradients and subtle shades can band or shift; a smaller width usually hides it better.

What if the start time is past the end of the video?

No usable frames are produced and the tool reports an error. Pick a start time inside the clip, with enough footage left for the duration you set.
